Pre and Post Guidelines for Electrolysis Hair Removal

Pre Treatment Guidelines

To help ensure your skin is in the best condition for electrolysis and to minimise unnecessary irritation, please follow the advice below before your appointment:

  • Keep the treatment area clean and well hydrated in the days leading up to your appointment.
  • Drink plenty of water, as well-hydrated skin can respond better to treatment.
  • Allow enough hair growth for the hairs to be clearly visible and accessible for treatment.
  • Inform me of any changes to your health, medical conditions or medication before treatment.
  • Let me know if you have experienced any unusual skin reactions or irritation in the treatment area.
  • Attend with clean skin wherever possible, particularly when treating the face.
  • Do not tweeze, wax, thread or epilate the hairs before your appointment, as the hair needs to be present within the follicle for treatment.
  • Avoid using retinoids, exfoliating acids (AHAs, BHAs, PHAs), scrubs or other potentially irritating active skincare on the treatment area for several days beforehand.
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure or sunbeds before treatment.
  • Avoid treatment if the area is sunburnt, broken, inflamed or significantly irritated.
  • Where possible, avoid applying heavy creams, oils, fake tan or makeup to the treatment area on the day of your appointment.
  • Avoid excessive caffeine immediately before your appointment if you find it increases your sensitivity.

Post Treatment Guidelines

  • Temporary redness, warmth, slight swelling or tenderness can be expected following electrolysis. Small pinpoint crusts may occasionally develop as the skin heals and should be allowed to come away naturally.
  • Keep the treated area clean and avoid unnecessary touching.
  • Apply only the recommended soothing or aftercare products.
  • Apply SPF 30–50 and protect the treated area from direct sun exposure.
  • Allow any small crusts or scabs to heal and fall away naturally.
  • A cool compress may be used if required to soothe temporary warmth or swelling.
  • Avoid makeup on the treated area for approximately 24 hours, where possible.
  • Avoid retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs and other strong active skincare until the skin has fully settled.
  • Avoid swimming, hot baths, saunas, steam rooms and excessive heat for 24–48 hours.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise or activities that cause excessive sweating for approximately 24 hours.
  • Avoid sunbeds and prolonged direct sun exposure while the skin is healing.
  • Avoid perfumed, fragranced or alcohol-based products on the treated area until it has settled.
  • Do not pick, scratch or remove any crusts that develop, as this may increase the risk of infection, pigmentation changes or scarring.
  • Do not wax, tweeze, thread or epilate between electrolysis appointments. Hairs may be carefully trimmed or clipped if necessary.
  • Follow any individual aftercare advice provided following your treatment.
